The recommended AI customer support chatbots with ticket handoff in 2026 are Intercom Fin, Zendesk AI agents, Freshdesk Freddy AI, Tidio Lyro, Gorgias AI Agent, Help Scout AI Answers, Chatbase, Crisp and HappySupport. All nine can pass a conversation to a person. They differ in where that conversation lands, what travels with it, and what the AI part costs while it works.
This guide compares how each chatbot hands off, not only whether it does: where the conversation ends up, whether the transcript and an AI summary go with it, what the bot answers from, and how the AI is billed. The short answer: pick Intercom Fin if you want a teammate to take over live in the same messenger, Zendesk if your support runs on ticket routing, Gorgias if you sell on Shopify, Chatbase if you want a bot that escalates into a helpdesk you already have, and HappySupport if you want the bot, the help center it answers from and the ticket inbox it hands off to in one flat-priced tool. Disclosure: HappySupport makes this post and is one of the tools compared.
Every competitor fact links to the vendor's own pricing page or documentation, checked in October 2026. Where a vendor does not state something, we say "not stated".
How each AI chatbot hands off to a human
"Entry price" is the cheapest published plan with both the AI chatbot and a handoff; seat and usage costs come on top where charged.
| Chatbot | Where the conversation lands | Transcript or AI summary | Answers from | AI billed | Entry price (checked October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intercom Fin | Intercom inbox, or a ticket in another helpdesk via workflow | Stays in Intercom; summary note on Expert | Only your sources | Per outcome, from $0.99 | From $29 per seat |
| Zendesk AI agents | Zendesk ticket, via your routing | History backfilled; summary not stated | Your knowledge sources | Per resolution above allowance | $55 per agent, annual |
| Freshdesk Freddy AI | Ticket queue or group; chat transfer | Summary note in Freshdesk Omni | Not stated | Per session after first 500 | $19 per agent, annual |
| Tidio Lyro | Live chat, or a ticket | Not stated | Only your content | Per Lyro conversation | $24.17 plus Lyro from $32.50 |
| Gorgias AI Agent | Ticket in the AI Agent handover view | Not stated | Help center, website, Shopify data | Per automated interaction | $10 plus AI Agent |
| Help Scout AI Answers | Chat or email in the Beacon's inbox | Not stated | Docs and added sources | Per resolution, $0.75 | $25 per user |
| Chatbase | Ticket in Chatbase Helpdesk or a connected helpdesk | AI summary; transcript only to Zendesk | Not stated | Credits in a flat plan | $120, billed yearly |
| Crisp | Main Inbox, then your routing | Manual /handover brief | Not stated | Credits in a flat plan | $95 per workspace |
| HappySupport | Ticket in the HappySupport inbox | Full conversation plus AI summary | Only your articles, cited | Flat allowance, no overage | 399 EUR flat |
How we checked these chatbots
The nine chatbots are the ones AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity) named most often for "recommended ai customer support chatbots with ticket handoff" in our answer-engine tracking from 14 to 17 October 2026: Intercom and Zendesk in all ten answers, Freshdesk in eight, Tidio in six, Gorgias in five, Help Scout and Chatbase in two. Crisp came up for the prompt about avoiding per-resolution fees; HappySupport is our product. For each tool we read the pricing page and the handoff documentation. We ran no hands-on tests and collected no ratings.
How to judge a handoff
A handoff is good when the customer does not repeat themselves and the person who picks it up can act on the first read. Test these six things with a real question your docs do not cover:
- Where it lands. A ticket in the tool your team works in, or a chat that is lost when nobody is online?
- What travels with it. The full transcript, and a summary of what the customer wants and what the bot tried?
- How the customer is reached. Does the bot collect an email when nobody is online, and do replies return to the same thread?
- When it hands off. Can you set topics that always go to a person, and does the bot hand off when the docs run out instead of guessing?
- What it answers from. A bot that answers only from your articles hands off at the edge of your docs. One that fills gaps from general knowledge hands off less and is wrong more.
- What the handoff costs. Some vendors bill a handoff as AI usage. Check what one billable unit is.
Point 5 is where most handoffs go wrong: an outdated knowledge base produces confident wrong answers instead of a clean handoff.
Two customer service authors we interviewed describe what a missing or broken handoff does to the customer. Jeff Toister, author of five books on customer service, on bots without a way out:
“AI is making service worse when it's implemented in a closed loop with no escalation path. Customers don't want to be forced to use AI. It's especially frustrating when AI is unable to solve their issue and then refuses to connect them with a human agent.
”
Shep Hyken, customer service expert and author of eight bestselling books, on handoffs that make the customer start over:
“The failure mode is when the customer cannot get out of the digital channel. They fill in the form, then they get pushed to the phone, then they have to start over again. That is the disconnect that ruins it.
”
The 9 AI support chatbots with ticket handoff
Each section gives a "Best for" verdict, how the handoff works, what the AI costs (checked October 2026) and the main limitation.
Intercom Fin
Best for: chat-first SaaS teams that want a teammate to take over in the same Intercom inbox.
Intercom says Fin "builds answers using only the most relevant information from multiple knowledge sources" you control, and hands over to a team or teammate you choose when it cannot resolve the conversation. For another support tool, a workflow collects the email address, closes the conversation in Intercom and creates a ticket through a data connector. An AI summary note for the teammate is a workflow action available on the Expert plan only.
Intercom pricing, per the Intercom pricing page (checked October 2026): Advanced $85 and Expert $132 per seat per month billed annually, Essential from $29 per seat per the pricing FAQ on the same page, and Fin from $0.99 per outcome. An outcome includes Fin completing a workflow, "including handoffs". The main limitation is cost predictability: the bill grows with seats and with every outcome, and a handoff can be one.
Zendesk AI agents
Best for: ticket-heavy support operations that already route work in Zendesk.
On Zendesk the handoff is built into the ticket. Per Zendesk's handoff guide, the conversation and its ticket pass to an agent or group through your routing flow, and the AI agent stops replying. On escalation the read-only AI agent ticket becomes editable, goes back to New, and for messaging "the conversation history is backfilled". Neither article describes an AI summary for messaging handoffs.
Zendesk pricing, per the Zendesk pricing page (checked October 2026, US prices): Suite Team $55 and Suite Professional $115 per agent per month billed annually, with 5 and 10 automated resolutions per agent per month included. Extra automated resolutions cost $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay as you go. The main limitation: the AI makes sense as part of the whole Suite, priced per agent, with routing you configure.
Freshdesk Freddy AI
Best for: growing teams that want AI agent sessions inside a per-agent helpdesk plan.
For email, Freshdesk's AI agent trigger rules put an escalated ticket into the queue for any agent or straight to a configured group. For chat, the AI agent response settings offer "Transfer to a human agent" after a fallback message, collecting up to 10 fields first. Freshworks documents a chatbot summary posted as a private note for conversations longer than ten interactions, listed for Freshdesk Omni and Freshchat.
Freshdesk pricing, per the Freshdesk pricing page (checked October 2026): Growth $19, Pro $55 and Enterprise $89 per agent per month billed annually. The page lists "First 500 sessions included" for the Freddy AI Agent, then $49 per 100 sessions; Freddy AI Copilot is a $29 per agent add-on on Pro and Enterprise. The main limitation: handoff features depend on the edition, and the summary note is documented for Freshdesk Omni.
Tidio Lyro
Best for: small websites and online stores that want live chat first and a ticket when nobody can take over.
Tidio's Lyro page says Lyro uses "only the content and guidance you provide", supports handoff and escalation rules, and when a question falls outside its knowledge "creates a ticket in your support solution so a real agent can answer". Ticketing is in every Tidio plan. Tidio's help center did not load for us, so what the ticket contains is not stated here.
Tidio pricing, per the Tidio pricing page (checked October 2026): a Free plan, Starter at $24.17 per month, Growth from $49.17 and Plus from $300 per month plus usage. Lyro is a separate add-on that "Starts at $32.50/mo" for 50 Lyro conversations, billed per conversation; pay-per-resolution billing is listed on Premium. The main limitation: Lyro is billed per conversation on top of the chat plan, so both grow with traffic.
Gorgias AI Agent
Best for: Shopify and ecommerce brands that want the AI to answer from store data and hand over inside the same helpdesk.
Gorgias' AI Agent documentation says the agent answers from "your help center articles, website content, documents, guidance, and Shopify data" across email, chat, SMS and social channels. Per Gorgias' handover guide, handed-over tickets appear in the AI Agent handover view and can be auto-assigned. When chat is offline the agent "always asks the shopper to enter their email". A summary for the agent is not described.
Gorgias pricing, per the Gorgias pricing page (checked October 2026): Starter $10, Basic $50, Pro $300 and Advanced $750 per month billed annually, with 50 to 5,000 helpdesk tickets. The AI Agent costs $0.90 per automated interaction on annual plans or $1.00 on monthly plans, and each one also counts as a helpdesk ticket. The main limitation is fit: a SaaS company gets little from the Shopify depth.
Help Scout AI Answers
Best for: small support teams that work from a shared inbox and want AI as a pay-per-resolution add-on.
Help Scout's AI runs inside Beacon, its website widget. The AI Answers best practices say it draws from your Docs site or other added sources, and customers can "chat or send a message for further help". A Beacon is associated with a single inbox, where the conversation lands. Whether the AI exchange or a summary appears in it is not stated.
Help Scout pricing, per the Help Scout pricing page (checked October 2026): Free, Standard at $25, Plus at $45 and Pro at $75 per user per month. AI Answers is an add-on at $0.75 per resolution with a 3-month free trial. The main limitation: both parts scale, users and resolutions.
Chatbase
Best for: founders who want an AI chatbot on their website that escalates into the helpdesk they already use.
Chatbase's Escalations action creates a ticket in Chatbase Helpdesk or a connected platform such as Zendesk, Salesforce, Intercom, Freshdesk, HubSpot or Help Scout. Every destination gets an AI-written summary of the conversation; only Zendesk can receive "the literal transcript". In chat on Chatbase Helpdesk the visitor's email is collected, and a verified address is used without asking.
Chatbase pricing, per the Chatbase pricing page (checked October 2026): Hobby $32, Standard $120 and Pro $400 per month billed yearly ($40, $150 and $500 monthly), with 700, 4,000 and 15,000 message credits. The helpdesk inbox and the Zendesk and Freshdesk integrations are listed from Standard. The main limitation: Chatbase is a chatbot, not a help center, so the content it answers from lives elsewhere and someone has to keep it current.
Crisp
Best for: small teams that want live chat, an AI agent and a shared inbox at one workspace price.
Crisp's AI agent is called Hugo. Per Crisp's escalation guide, Hugo escalates when it has no answer, when the user asks for a human, on situations you describe, or when a teammate takes over. The conversation then leaves the Automated inbox for the Main Inbox, where your routing rules apply. A handover brief is available on demand: the /handover command in Hugo Copilot generates one for a private note, on Essentials or Plus.
Crisp pricing, per the Crisp pricing page (checked October 2026): Mini $45, Essentials $95 and Plus $295 per workspace per month, with 4, 10 and 20 seats. The AI chatbot and the knowledge base start on Essentials, whose $25 of AI credits Crisp estimates at around 450 automated conversations. The main limitation: the customer ticket portal starts on the $295 Plus plan; below it, handoff means the shared chat inbox.
HappySupport
Best for: SaaS teams that want the bot, the help center it answers from and the ticket inbox it hands off to in one flat-priced tool.
HappySupport is a support suite for software companies: a help center, an AI chatbot on the help center and in the in-app widget, and a ticket inbox. The chatbot answers only from your own articles, with citations, and hands off when the articles do not cover the question, when the request needs an account or billing action, or when a message contains a legal threat, complaint, distress or abuse.
Under the bot's last message the visitor gets a "Talk to our support team" form: an email field (skipped when your site already identified the user), an optional message and a consent checkbox. On send, a ticket opens in the HappySupport inbox with the full conversation and an AI-written summary of what the visitor wants, what the bot answered and what is missing, assigned to the person you set for that help center. Your team replies by email, and customer replies land in the same thread. You can limit handoff to signed-in readers or switch it off.
HappySupport pricing, per the HappySupport pricing page: a 14-day free trial, then Starter 129 EUR, Professional 399 EUR and Scale 899 EUR per month, flat, with no per-seat and no per-resolution fee. Customer AI answers start on Professional (250 a month, 1,000 on Scale); 250 more cost 100 EUR a month, and when the allowance runs out, search keeps working and nothing is charged automatically. Team members are capped at 1, 5 and 10. Git Handoff (Professional and up) reads commits and pull requests from GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket and proposes article updates when the code changes, for your team to review, so the bot does not answer from stale articles. More on the AI help center page.
HappySupport's limitations: team replies go out by email, not live chat; there is no phone channel and no omnichannel routing; and HappySupport is not SOC 2 certified, not HIPAA compliant, with no SCIM or self-hosting. Data is hosted in Germany under GDPR. The company was founded in 2025.
Which AI support chatbot avoids per-resolution fees?
Chatbase, Crisp and HappySupport avoid per-resolution fees: AI usage is included in a flat plan as credits or a monthly allowance of AI answers. The other six meter the AI per outcome, resolution, interaction, conversation or session.
For a three-person team whose AI resolves 500 conversations a month, list prices land roughly here: Intercom Essential at $29 a seat comes to $87 plus $495 in outcomes, $582 in total; Help Scout Standard $75 plus $375, $450; Zendesk Suite Team $165 plus 485 extra resolutions at $1.50, $892.50. HappySupport Professional with one extra block of 250 AI answers comes to 499 EUR, and Crisp Essentials covers around 450 automated conversations for $95. The units differ: a resolved conversation is not the same as an AI answer or a credit, so check what one unit is. Our guide to flat-price help center software works through the pricing models in more detail.
Top AI support chatbots for B2B companies in 2026
For B2B companies, Intercom Fin and Zendesk AI agents are the established choices when the team needs routing, SLAs and many channels and the budget allows per-seat plus per-resolution pricing. Smaller B2B SaaS support teams get more from a bot that answers only from their own docs and hands off as a ticket with context; HappySupport fits that at a flat price, but enterprises that require SOC 2 should shortlist Intercom or Zendesk. Our post on connecting a knowledge base to an AI chatbot covers escalation paths in practice.
Frequently asked questions
Which AI customer support chatbots hand off to a human with a ticket?
Zendesk AI agents, Freshdesk Freddy AI, Gorgias AI Agent, Chatbase and HappySupport turn a handoff into a ticket in their helpdesk. Tidio Lyro creates a ticket when a question falls outside its knowledge, Intercom Fin hands over in the Intercom inbox or creates a ticket in another helpdesk through a workflow, Help Scout routes to a chat or email conversation in its inbox, and Crisp moves the chat to its main inbox, with a ticket portal on the Plus plan.
Which AI support chatbot avoids per-resolution fees?
Chatbase, Crisp and HappySupport avoid per-resolution fees by including AI usage in a flat plan. Chatbase includes message credits from $120 a month billed yearly on the plan with its helpdesk inbox, Crisp includes AI credits per workspace from $95 for the AI chatbot, and HappySupport includes 250 AI answers a month on Professional at 399 EUR and 1,000 on Scale at 899 EUR, with no overage charged automatically.
What is the best AI support chatbot for a solo SaaS founder?
For a solo SaaS founder, pick a chatbot that answers from your own docs and collects an email when it cannot help, so you can reply later. Chatbase is a simple start if you only need a bot. HappySupport suits a founder who also wants the help center and a ticket inbox in one flat-priced tool, with customer AI answers from the 399 EUR Professional plan.
What should travel with a chatbot handoff?
A good chatbot handoff carries the full conversation, a short summary of what the customer wants and what the bot already tried, and a way to reach the customer, usually an email address. Zendesk backfills messaging history into the ticket, Chatbase sends an AI summary to every connected helpdesk, Intercom adds an AI summary note on its Expert plan, and HappySupport attaches the conversation and an AI-written problem summary to every handed-off ticket.
